SCHOOL RPOGRAMME
We want to give education to the children in remote, rural areas. In India, there are Government and private schools, but most of them have too many students and too few teachers. Sometimes the children have to walk very long distances to go to the school. Most of the time they refuse to go due to the long distance.
To educate our children we have built 8 pre-primary schools, 10 primary schools and 4 Secondary schools in rural areas of 24 Parganas (S), West Bengal.
The best way to help India is to support one child for the education, which will remove the poverty of a family and will give human dignity for the child.
IIMC SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMME
the poor people of India educationally, medically & economically. It was started in 1989 by Dr. Sujit Brahmochary to provide medical treatment. But it was soon realized that medical problems have a larger context. When people do not have proper nutrition, proper education, proper economical means, medical problems are a consequence of their situations.
Most of the people can’t read the prescription of the doctor; and they do not know what is bad and what is good. So it was clear that people need at least primary education and so we started with 10 sponsored children in 1993. After one year the result was very encouraging. All these children were healthy clean and medically rich. So health care and schooling, ultimately changed the whole family and we believe this will bring improvement to our poor and backward society.
WHY WE SPONSOR A POOR CHILD
India is a very big, highly populated tropical country. We have mountains, sea, and minerals but still we are very poor because we do not know how to utilize all those valuable necessary things due to lack of education. Till now 56% people are illiterate and 40% people are under poverty level. In this situation if we want to bring the development of our society we have to go through the education of people. If everyone can read and write it will make difference for our backward society. Poor people have an idea that school is not for them, only children from rich high family can go to the school. That is why we have started a sponsorship programme for the poor & backward families.
HOW WE SPONSOR A CHILD
The programme was started in July 1994.At first we organize one awareness visit, house to house to explain to the poor parents about the importance of education. We encourage & motivate the parents and this process goes on in our medical centres among the mothers of sick children.For final selection we use some criteria for the sponsorship, e.g. children who are born into a very poor & illiterate, landless family. Most of these parents are working as a day labourer, rickshaw puller, street hawker, house servant etc.
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY SPONSORSHIP
Sponsored children are living with their parents. We provide school fees, study material, uniforms, shoes, socks, school bags, books, midday food, private tuition fees, everything whatever they need for their education. Sponsored children come once or twice in a month in our main Indoor centre to collect their materials & money. Overall we support them to give social & moral courage.
WHAT OTHER FACILITIES SPONSORED STUDENTS ARE GETTING FROM IIMC.
Financial support: The mothers of our sponsored children are getting financial support from the project. We have opened a Micro Savings and Micro Credit unit for them. Mothers can save a little money for their future and they can take a loan for their small business to uplift their financial status.
Family counseling: When parents of our sponsored children have some problem we are trying to give some solution & proper counselling.
REHABILITATION FOR THE MOTHER OF SPONSORED CHILDREN
We have opened a sewing unit and women\'s co-operative where poor mothers of our sponsored students can make uniforms for school students.
We have also one bag project where the mothers are making school bags and many different type of handicraft. We have a small shop, which is run by women.
HOW LONG WE SPONSOR A CHILD
Normally sponsored children are coming from a very poor family. Sponsored children generally continue till higher secondary school (Class-XII) (18 years old). After that they can work to earn money for their family. Some are very intelligent and they can continue up to the University (21 years old) If some children cannot continue their study we inform their foster parents to stop sponsoring. But if the foster parents want to sponsor another child we send a new child file.

The price of your 2 meals or 3 pizzas’ can give the total solution of illiteracy of a child for one month.

School Progress report every year after annual examination.
Child will write on her/his birthday & New Year’s times.
IIMC Education coordinators will keep you informed regularly with the reports of the institution.
Sponsoring parents can always write to the child.
Your personal visit to Kolkata, the project & the child home is very welcome.
