Medical Program

Indoor Centre

IIMC's Indoor Centre has been running a Residential Child Care Centre for the last 12 years. Children suffering from Marasmus, Marasmic Kwashiorkor or Kwashiorkor are admitted in the Indoor Hospital. First the children attend the Outdoor Clinic and are then referred to the Indoor Centre for further treatment. The children who are suffering from skin diseases; worm infestation and respiratory problems are also admitted in the Indoor Centre. Childcare and hygiene and awareness training are also provided by this Centre. Every month 7 to 8 foreign volunteers, mostly medical students, give their sincere effort and active participation towards this programme. Expert nursing management from abroad supports special nursing teaching. Three doctors are giving their sincere effort full time at the indoor centre.

Tegharia Outdoor Centre

This clinic has been running for 16 years, twice a week on Monday & Thursday at Tegharia, Sonarpur. Ten doctors provide free consultations and free medicines. About 600-700 patients are attending every clinic day. Severely malnourished children are treated and provided with nutritious food packets. The Health Education and Health Promotion teams are always working at the Outdoor to counsel the mothers in family planning, breastfeeding & childcare, mother awareness, health hygiene etc. and provide a low cost nutritional diet. The growth and development of children has been regularly monitored with growth charts with prime importance directed towards the follow-up of babies who are attending regularly. Nutritious, cooked food is served among malnourished needy children. The X-ray facility at the clinic is providing very helpful support for the poor patients at a very reasonable cost. The Pathology Unit is working well and numbers of patients are increasing. The Eye and Dental unit is also working with good reputation. Apart from this, a Homeopathy unit is working within the Outdoor clinic.

Chakberia Sub centre

This Centre has been functioning for the last 14 years, once a week on Tuesday. Three general physicians regularly attend with a complete medical team including foreign volunteers, health workers and nurses. As there is no other health facility the demand is high but IIMC always tries to overcome any limitations and endeavours to extend the service to many more areas. About 300–400 patients are attending every clinic day. A Micro Savings & Micro Credit programme has been initiated in this area.

Hogolkuria Sub centre

Hogolkuria Sub centre has been continuing for the last 15 years, once a week on Friday. Many other activities have been initiated in this area such as the Micro Finance Banking System, School, Cultivation, Housing for homeless people, etc. This project is an IIMC model which other projects will follow. About 200-300 patients are attending every clinic day.

Kheyadah Sub centre

This clinic has been running for 8 years. Addressing the needs of a remote and tribal area most of the people have low literacy levels and poor health facilities; there is a continuous demand to extend this service. IIMC has already started housing for those people without land. In the near future IIMC intends to employ multiple steps to promote health status & awareness, literacy, agricultural development, as well as health related events. A permanent building is being constructed for the clinic. About 300-400 patients are attending each clinic day.

Dhaki Health Centre

This clinic is quite far from Calcutta near the Bay of Bengal in Sundarban Delta area. This area is a very isolated and backward area. There is no health facility within 30 km from this Centre. The demand is very high & patients are increasing day by day. So IIMC has initiated a complete health facility in this area with a view to establish an Outdoor, Indoor, Maternity Centre and Residence for Doctors and health workers. An outdoor centre has been continuing since 2002 & the maternity centre has been started and going well. As this area is very isolated and there is no other alternative health care facility the demand is high and the patients are increasing day by day. About 600-800 patients are attending twice in each week right now. From April 2007 we have been started a safe delivery programme for the pregnant mothers in remote villages through the local midwife.
