Bangladesh was known to me and our IIMC Mission is working with the model of Grameen Bank’s Micro-Credit system for several years and it was an opportunity that Prof Yunus the father of Grameen Micro-Credit System visited and stayed with us for whole day few months before. All these could not be crystallized till I could visit Prof. Yunus and his work in Bangladesh in 14th August.
We all know Prof. Yunus has a Universal big success in Micro finance for peripheral poor people, Apart from this he has a greater desire to reach the rural poor people with health services, where IIMC-Mission has big success and long experience and so I was invited to share and to make plans for comprehension health service for the poor.
It was good chance that one of our pioneer associate Dr. Jan Gysen of Belgium joined with me for this meetings.
Prof. Yunus wants to cover up with health services to the all members of Micro-Credit and in West Bengal chapter IIMC could be the partner organization and so we had long planning meeting to work out and to prepare a definite plan.
We were whole day in the head office of Grameen Bank in Dhaka, and ended the day with an enriching experience to see a great work of a Great Man.
In a remote village of West Midnapore, torrential monsoon rains washed Parul and her family’s hut away. She is 7 months pregnant and together with her two malnourished children she narrowly escapes the floods as they take cover under plastic on the district road.
Days later acute diarrhea set in causing severe dehydration and malnutrition. Just in time health workers from the IIMC project arrived with life saving packets containing ORS (oral rehydration solution) and ND (nutrition diet). When the packets were administered to the family their health quickly improved; after 7 days the children gained a substantial amount of weight and Parul’s pregnancy was out of danger.
We have deemed these aid packets ‘magical boxes’ as they are an effective in the fast treatment of acute dehydration and malnutrition. The ORS solution contains a mix of simple salts and sugar in clean water while the ND contains a simple mixture of carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals, the essential ingredients to basic nutrition. Both of these components in the ‘magic boxes’ cost little in their preparation and can be prepared from local ingredients.
We, IIMC, want to avoid the senseless tragedy of death due to malnutrition, therefore we want to make these ‘magic boxes’ available to every Indian mother and child. Our goal is to distribute monthly over 5000 boxes to families and to have extra boxes in reserve in the need of a calamity. With the generous support of our donators we can realize our goal and help save thousands of lives.
This is our great pleasure to let you know that Noble Peace Prize Winner and founder of Bangladesh Grameen Bank Prof. Muhammad will visit IIMC and will meet all the members of our Micro-Credit bank and rural Mothers on 30th December.
